Advice for the best Publicity !

Today I met with a designer I’ve been working with for over a year. She wanted to have more exposure, but didn’t want to risk spending money on conventional marketing. I explained as a fashion consultant, that in these “new” (not bad) economy we all just have to get creative.

So if you’re a designer and/ or have a product to sell you might want to take my suggestion :

Pick top 10 national magazines, these need to be magazines that your product and your branding would fit in. For example if you have yoga wear you should pick fitness magazine, not Bon Appetite. After you have your 10 make 10 units of your signature product. It should be your best selling and/or the piece you get the best response from. Now get the editors name and mailing address to the magazine and send it off. Do this ten times and you will get a response. The KEY to getting the response is two crucial things.

1. the product
2. The letter in with the product

There needs to be a call to action in the package they receive. Its a well constructed letter that explains who you are, how much you appreciate their knowledge in the industry, and asks them what they think of your product. It will be a compliment to them and make you look respectful and humble. The best part is there is a high probability you will get an email thank you and or a great review of your product from an editor in large. If they love your product, you now have a relationship and a chance to get your product in a National Magazine. So imagine if you send out 10 of these care packages and they all respond - you better be ready for your sales to sky rocket! Now how can you get better publicity for just the cost of goods and shipping?
